ALIENATION

Half the time I feel like I’m on the outside of the world peeping in through a knot-hole in the fence.

Richard Wright, from Native Son

Feelings of alienation can visit us all, and they sometimes move in for an extended stay. It may seem at times that all the action is “out there” somewhere, and that we’re no more than observers. Perhaps we feel incapable of plunging in, competing, fighting, making our mark on the world.

What choice do we really have? If we withdraw, we lose out on chances to give ourselves the rewards and satisfactions that are possible.

Our interaction with others can make a positive impact. Let’s understand that who we are is what we’ve decided we’ll be. Let’s recognize our personal power. We have more control than we may think.

Call to Action:  On this day, I will do something to involve myself—at work, in the PTA, or with my family. I will make my voice heard.
