COPING

Yeah, life hurts like hell, but this is how I keep going. I have a sense of humor, I’ve got my brothers and sisters. I’ve got the ability to make something out of nothing. I can clap my hands and make magic.

—Bill T. Jones

We all need to find the way to clap our hands and make magic.

Not one of us doesn’t have burdens to bear, or sorrows, disappointments, and frustrations. If we let those define our lives, then, yes, we’re going to focus on the hurt, and nothing will alleviate our suffering, nothing will give us joy.

Where do we find the joy? In whatever ignites our passions and gives us pleasure. For Bill Jones, joy comes from dancing, from his friends, from his sense of humor. For us, it might be from our gardens, our children, the poems we write, the quilts we stitch, the songs we sing, the time we spend in church or at the piano. We must actively look inside ourselves for fulfillment and be willing to experiment and stretch ourselves. This is how we all make magic.

Call to Action: On this day, I will take five minutes to think about what gives me joy and pleasure.
